  • Community Radio

I have been working for our local community radio station SeahavenFM for the past month which has been both a delight and an eye opener. The response to our first trial broadcast on FM has been way beyond expectations and listenership has been worldwide via the internet. We have our last session on FM today and return for another month in August, but in the mean time we are chasing OfCom for a full community licence.

As part of our future development we aim to deliver a 'DJ school' giving tuition in all aspects of broadcasting so as to develop local talent. We are also linking up with local schools to encourage school children to participate in one way or another.

I feel projects like these really help the local community in actually being a community, what do you think?

  • Death of Radio Sport

There was a time when the world of Radio Sport was thriving now it appears only the BBC are interested. We have a number of commercial stations in our area and all are now glorified jukeboxes whose only connection with the community are local ads and a small bit of local news. Local sport is a major part of many communities but sadly one that is now totally ignored by commercial radio. The BBC are also very picky on what they cover. There is no consistency between stations and I'm at a loss as to how one station can accurately cover the diverse counties of Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire! I thought the age of digital radio would improve things but in truth we had much better local sports coverage 15 years ago than we have now.
